Similar
Fish: Black Drum
Where
Found: Juveniles are an INSHORE fish, migrating out of the estuaries
at about 30 inches (4 years) and joining the spawning population OFFSHORE.
These fish can be found in the backwaters around oyster bars and shallow
grass flats on the incoming tide.
Size:
1 to 30 pounds are common.
•
Florida Record: 51 lbs., 8 ozs.
Remarks:
Spawning occurs from August to November in inshore waters. Redfish
mainly feed on crustaceans, fish and mollusks. They have a longevity
of 20 years or more. When targeting these species a number of baits
will produce fish on a regular basis. One and my favorite is the ¼
oz. Weed less gold spoon. Small pinfish hooked behind the dorsal fin
is a strong second. And normally any of the plastic shrimp imitations
work wonders, I really have been impressed with the DOA glow shrimp,
it has produced fish when other lures have failed.
