Similar Fish: Other Jacks

Where Found: Shallow flats and nearshore waters. Larger individuals are found in open waters, well offshore.

Size: Commonly caught from 3 to 5 pounds.

Florida Record: 51 lbs.

Remarks: They can tolerate a wide range of salinities. They can be seen attacking in schools as they corner baitfish at the surface and feed with commotion that can be seen at great distances. They mainly feed on small baitfish, and shrimp. Their peak spawning occurs offshore from March through September. When targeting these species, nothing beats a live shrimp or a soft plastic shrimp imitation tossed in front of a moving school. A school of jacks can normally be identified by a V wake on the surface of the water as they swim through in schools.
